With winter in full swing, it comes as a consistent surprise to us at Four Fifty Five
when our clients arrive to our studio
, frozen to the bone, without a pair of gloves on. Personally, I can’t stand the feeling of cold and frozen fingers. In fact, we’ve tried pinning a pair of pants with frozen fingers, and found it not only difficult, but tremendously uncomfortable. For that reason, and due to a request or two (or three), we thought we’d impart what some would call woolen-wisdom; the ins and outs of wearing gloves.
First and foremost, although not well known, gloves are an all-season fashion accessory. Remember the days when everyone used their glove box for its intended purpose - to hold gloves? Ah - the good old days, wheeling around with leather driving gloves, the smell of burnt gasoline in the air and the rumble of the engine beneath our feet. Nowadays, no one wears driving gloves - much to our dismay. The best way to show off the fact that you’re a snazzy dresser and you’re not afraid to show it? Go get yourself a pair of leather, low cut driving gloves. Preferably ones with a snap, so they don’t fly off when you have the top down.
When it comes to winter, you have three major options. Wool fingered gloves, leather fingered gloves, and the Canadian classic... mittens. Our rule to the winter glove game is simple - if you’re wearing a long jacket, no matter the material, you should opt for the leather gloves. They’re suave, simple, sophisticated and seriously warm. When wearing a short jacket (anything that finishes above your seat), you’re venturing into casual territory. For that reason, we’d recommend keeping your gloves wool.
Our rationale? You wouldn’t wear sneakers with a tuxedo, so you shouldn’t wear leather gloves with a casual jacket. As for the classic Canadian mittens? Those are the wildcard, for when the Canadian winter throws you a curve ball in the form of -45 degree wind chills and a metre of snow. Some days the phrase “fashion over function” just can’t be applicable, especially when the air is cold enough to turn your fingers blue.
